Cancellieri Demonstrates Flashing Moments of Genius in Positive Aspect for Haywire Lazio

The feeling at the Stadio Olimpico was decidedly gloomy during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, an opponent that had let in a total of 10 goals while managing only two goals in their last five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were finishing their ongoing dissent in an ongoing feud with club owner Claudio Lotito.

A Season Coming Unstitched?

Had their campaign falling apart, or did there exist any cohesion holding it together to start with? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as head coach in the summer transfer window, but then he admitted that the club had not mentioned a registration embargo they were about to receive for accounting issues. Rumours that he might quit were not true, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Roman club appeared equally disorganized on the pitch as they were off it, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the remaining initial five matches, which included the capital clash. At any given moment, it has been hard to ascertain if they are improving or collapsing.

Cancellieri's Unforeseen Comeback

At least one man remained positive amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to remain with Lazio during this campaign. He spent last season on loan at Parma and, at the start of the off-season, his parent club were pushing for him to stay there a while longer. The registration embargo necessitated a reconsideration. Lazio could not afford to weaken their team with no new signings.

He signed in the first place when Sarri was last in charge, at that time a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 matches in the league with the club in 2022-23, all but one of those from the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended following that term, would later accuse Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri would be a star only to bench him consistently."

Discovering His Natural Fit

Perhaps the manager was persistently working to identify the exact type of Cancellieri's abilities. Billed as a flank player when he joined, Cancellieri nevertheless spent most of that campaign as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. Across 63 games while playing for Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
