Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments from captain Stokes about the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in multiple interviews in the wake of his team's defeat in the second Ashes series versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face a series loss with a match to spare, the captain stated he had let his message to "drift around" among the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

But, after Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "weak men" observation after England suffered a loss in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The team subsequently took a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before this match, Stokes said his team had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their previous three years in charge.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," said the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat going into this game."

Australia Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday came during a crucial triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

A loss will extend the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes series defeat.

This series will be completed in just 11 days of play – after England fell the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," admitted the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable team. It was always going to be tough coming here to face them. They entered as the front-runners and they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

Although the opener's performance in Adelaide probably answers questions about his immediate place in the England team, Pope appears under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 in England's second innings on Saturday, extending his poor record versus Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

But, the opener insisted any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is noise externally. There is no discussion like that on Ollie in the camp," he concluded.
