The US Justice Department has entered the fray in a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, aiming to halt the state's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This court case, filed in a US district court, challenges the map supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on voting rights and mocks the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the new maps will survive legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and soon they will also lose in court," stated a representative for the governor.
Legal Basis
The legal challenge claims that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in contravention of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," stated a senior official from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the most significant counterpunch by the Democratic party in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required voter approval, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to flip just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the controlling share will shape the remaining period of the current administration, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its agenda or encounter opposition, investigations and possible further challenges.
