England and Welsh Pitted in the Same Group for 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The pool stage draw was conducted by sporting icons such as former All Black Dan Carter.

The English side together with Wales find themselves placed in the same pool for the 2027 RWC, promising a major early clash in Australia. They are joined in Group F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and Zimbabwe.

This pairing recalls their infamous meeting in the pool stages of the 2015 World Cup, where a Welsh win at England's home ground contributed to the hosts' surprise early exit.

Other Notable Pool Draws

The Irish and the Scots also share a group together, replicating the scenario from the France 2023 tournament. In that tournament, Ireland secured a convincing victory, with Scotland failing to advance to the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Portugal, both impressed as surprise packages in the last World Cup, round out that same group.

Notably, the victors of these two groups cannot meet holders and top-ranked South Africa before the showpiece match, assuming the Springboks top their own group.

Knockout Ramifications

If the pools play out according to the current world rankings, further top favourites like the All Blacks and France would remain separated from the likes of England and the Irish all the way to the championship decider.

In that scenario, Argentina would be the other top-ranked nation on that half of the knockout draw as those northern hemisphere teams.

Tournament Hosts Face Major Opener

Hosts Australia have been drawn alongside their great rivals and triple champions the All Blacks in Group A.

The Wallabies will kick off the World Cup in Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a blockbuster fixture aimed at launch the event.

In other groups, holders the Springboks have been paired with the Azzurri, Georgia and Romania. The French team are in a pool with Japan, future hosts the USA and Samoa.

Larger Format for 2027

Argentina will face Fiji, Los Leones and Canada as the tournament expands to twenty-four nations from the twenty who took part in France.

The 2027 tournament will introduce a last-16 stage for the first time in Rugby World Cup existence.

While the victor of England and Wales's group may be kept apart from some of the rugby's heavyweights early on, they will have to face the runner-up from Pool B – probably Italy – in the first knockout round.

Four of the other six group winners will face a third-placed side from the pool stages.
