A recent study suggests that patients who discontinue new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users using these drugs must be cognizant of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a reversion to starting mass in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Experts believe the way of the injections accounts for the amplified regain.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."
A Chronic Disease?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
People who have stopped the jabs describe a powerful return of cravings.
"It felt as if a trigger flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled one woman.
This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success relies on ongoing behavioural support.
