Each time a prominent honors show draws close, you'll find a clamor for the addition fresh award types to honor overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are board games, which is someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case for why my demand remains most pressing and significant. This is the request: We need a category for puzzle games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason cinema institutions avoid this approach. Yet it remains a necessary evil in the world of gaming, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.
To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
Leading game ceremonies presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories successfully include numerous genres, making space possible accommodating various experiences.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Think about these recent excellent titles, all very different: building puzzles of one title, intense tile-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.
- One classic puzzle game received no recognition completely that year
- Another creative title was excluded in 2019
- A beloved organization game got ignored recently
- Just some puzzle games managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories
Importance of Logic Titles
Commonly they're compact experiences, but the art behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among the most-played games globally maintaining this status for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges popular creative games for the title of best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging with diverse game types.
The Solution and Justification
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.
To emphasize again, these are games without proper classification in important events. Brain-teaser creators function at the hard edge of video game design, creating some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Just like film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay decades.
